Early Cancer Screening
Early detection is one of the most effective ways to improve cancer outcomes. In Singapore, established screening programmes are available for common cancers such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer.
However, many cancers still do not have routine screening options, and may only be detected at a later stage when symptoms develop.
What is Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening?
A newer form of blood-based cancer screening
Single blood test, no fasting required
Non-invasive
Analyses circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) and other biomarkers released by cancer cells into the blood

MCED screening in Singapore may be suitable for:
- Adults aged 40 years and above

How Accurate is MCED Screening?
High specificity: ~99%
Less likely to produce false positive results as compared to traditional tumour markers such as CEA and CA 19-9
Relatively high overall sensitivity
SPOT-MAS: ~78%
LucenceINSIGHT: ~81%
Sensitivity refers to the ability to detect a disease when it is present.
The sensitivity of MCED screening tests varies depending on cancer type and stage, and may be lower in very early cancers.

Limitations of MCED Screening
MCED tests are not diagnostic, and a negative result does not completely exclude the possibility of cancer. MCED screening should not replace recommended cancer screening programmes.
Patients should continue routine screening such as:
Mammogram
(breast cancer)
Pap smear / HPV test
(cervical cancer)
FIT test or colonoscopy
(colorectal cancer)
