PCV20 Pneumococcal Vaccine in Singapore: Protection Against Serious Pneumococcal Disease
Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can lead to serious illness, particularly in older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions.

The newer PCV20 pneumococcal vaccine offers broader protection than previous pneumococcal vaccines and is now subsidized in Singapore.
What is pneumococcal disease?
Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can cause infections ranging from mild illnesses to life-threatening disease.
The Streptococcus pneumoniae can cause infections such as:
- Pneumonia (lung infection)
- Sinus infections
- Ear infections (otitis media)
- Bloodstream infections (bacteraemia and sepsis)
- Meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord)
What are the complications of pneumococcal disease?
Pneumococcal infections can become serious, especially if the bacteria spreads beyond the lungs or upper respiratory tract.
Potential serious complications can include:
- Severe pneumonia, which can result in breathing problems requiring hospitalisation
- Bloodstream infections, which can result in sepsis
- Meningitis (brain infection), which can cause permanent neurological damage
- Organ failure and death, particularly in vulnerable individuals
Who is at risk of serious pneumococcal disease?
- Older adults aged 65 years and above
- Smokers
- People with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease
- People with weakened immune systems
How is pneumococcal disease treated?
Pneumococcal disease is typically treated with antibiotics. However, some strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae have developed resistance to commonly used antibiotics, making treatment more challenging.
Vaccination remains the most effective strategy for preventing pneumococcal disease, helping to reduce the risk of severe infection and potentially life-threatening complications.
PCV13, PPSV23 and PCV20: What is the difference?
There are three main pneumococcal vaccines used in adults:

Which pneumococcal vaccine is right for you?
The most appropriate pneumococcal vaccine depends on factors such as your age, medical conditions, immune status, and previous pneumococcal vaccinations.
If you have already received PCV13 or PPSV23, you may still benefit from PCV20 depending on your vaccination history.

The PCV20 vaccine is included under Singapore’s National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS).
Eligible Singapore Citizens can receive government subsidies at our clinics under the CHAS program.
