Knee Pain Treatment in Singapore

Medically reviewed by Dr Amaris Lim, MBBS, MMed (Fam Med), Grad Dip Sports Med – last reviewed August 2026

Knee pain can result from arthritis, overuse, sports injuries or age-related wear and tear. Our sports medicine physicians assess the underlying cause of your knee pain and offer targeted, non-surgical treatment options to help reduce pain and improve mobility. Consultations are available at our Clementi and Geylang clinics.

What are the Common Causes of Knee Pain?

Knee Osteoarthritis:

    • One of the most common causes of chronic knee pain in adults
    • Occurs when the cartilage cushioning the knee joint gradually wears down
    • Leads to pain, stiffness, and swelling
    • Progresses with age or repetitive joint stress

Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee):

    • Inflammation of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shin bone
    • Often caused by repetitive jumping or running activities
    • Typically presents as pain just below the kneecap that worsens with activity

Ligament and Soft Tissue Injuries:

    • Sports-related knee injuries include strains to the surrounding ligaments and soft tissue
    • Can cause persistent pain, swelling, or instability
    • More common in athletes and active individuals

Our sports medicine specialist will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the underlying cause of your knee pain and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your condition.

Knee Injections for Osteoarthritis

Steroid Injections:

    • Can help reduce inflammation and pain in the knee
    • Relief can be experienced within several days
    • Effects can last for several weeks to months

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Injections:

    • Aim to supplement the joint’s natural lubricating fluid (synovial fluid), which helps to absorb shock in the joint
    • Injection of hyaluronic acid into the knee joint replaces diseased synovial fluid, and helps to protect the underlying cartilage from further damage
    • HA injections can help reduce pain and stiffness associated with knee osteoarthritis
    • Effects last for about 6 months on average

Exercise Therapy:

Alongside injections, our sports medicine physician may recommend activity modification, targeted exercises, or a structured treatment plan tailored to your specific diagnosis and lifestyle.

Treatment Options for Tendon Injuries

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT):

    • Delivers focused sound wave pulses to the affected tendon
    • Promotes blood flow and stimulates the body’s natural repair process

Exercise Therapy:

Our sports medicine physician may also recommend a tailored stretching and exercise programme to support tendon recovery.
