Traveler’s diarrhea is the most common travel-related illness. Patients with traveler’s diarrhea may develop symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain.

It may be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. High-risk destinations include Asia (except Japan and South Korea), the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, and Central and South America.

Precautions:

    • Food
      • Consume food that is well-cooked, and still hot
      • Fruits that are peeled by yourself right before consumption are safe
      • Avoid ready-cut fruits
      • Avoid unpasteurized dairy products
      • Avoid undercooked fish or meat
      • Avoid food from road-side stalls or stalls where sanitation may be poor

    • Drinks
      • Avoid consuming tap water, ice made from tap water, and raw foods rinsed with tap water
      • Consume boiled, treated or bottled water
      • Carbonated beverages, beer, wine and drinks made from boiled water are safe

    • Hand Hygiene
      • Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before eating
      • If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer

Treatment:

    • Hydrate!
      • Drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated
      • Oral rehydration salts can be purchased from pharmacies for fluid and electrolyte replacement

    • Anti-diarrheal Medications
      • Bring along anti-diarrheal medications or obtain them from the pharmacy for mild cases of diarrhea

    • Antibiotics
      • Visit a doctor in severe cases of diarrhea as antibiotics may be required
