Influenza

The influenza vaccine protects against both influenza virus types A and B which cause seasonal influenza (also known as the flu). The influenza vaccine is released twice a year to protect against the latest strains of influenza A and B.

Who should get the Influenza Vaccine?

  • The flu vaccination is recommended for all adults
  • It is strongly recommended for the following high-risk populations:
    • Individuals aged 65 years and above
    • Pregnant women (any trimester)
    • People with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart/ lung/ kidney/ liver diseases
    • Immunocompromised individuals (including patients on long-term steroids/ cancer drugs)
    • Healthcare workers
    • Frequent travellers

How is the vaccine given?

  • The influenza vaccine is given as an injection into the arm
  • One dose is recommended every year for optimal protection

What are the common side effects of the vaccine?

  • Pain or swelling over the injection site
  • Fever, body aches, tiredness
  • Severe allergic reactions: rashes, eye swelling, lip swelling or difficulty breathing
