“Do I have to take medications for the rest of my life for my blood pressure/ diabetes/ cholesterol?” This is a question that I get a lot as a primary health practitioner also known as GP. This is also the question that opens up the communication channel that my patient and I share, which enable them to understand and better manage their condition.

Hypertension

Heart attacks/diseases and strokes are commonly and collectively referred to as cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a significant healthcare burden in Singapore. It contributed about 29.5% of the almost 19,000 deaths in 2013. This means that, 1 in 3 of us are likely to die from a heart attack, heart disease or stroke. If we exclude children and infants, this percentage will be even higher.

Your liver produces cholesterol, but you also get cholesterol from food. Eating too many foods that are high in animal fats can increase your cholesterol level. Being overweight and inactive also causes high cholesterol. If you are overweight, you most likely have a higher level of triglycerides. Your family history also affects your cholesterol level. Research has shown that high cholesterol tends to run in families. If you have an immediate family member who has it, you could have it, too.

How To Win The War Against Diabetes

In the medical condition diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough of the hormone insulin (as in type 1 diabetes) or can’t effectively use the insulin although it does make it excessively (ie insulin resistance). The result is an excess level of circulating blood glucose.

Singapore's ageing population has contributed to the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases. 1 in 4 Singaporeans aged 40 years and above has at least 1 chronic disease(s) (diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol & stroke). The risk of getting one or more of these chronic diseases increases with age. Unhealthy lifestyle will increase the risk further. The onset of health complications for such diseases and the high medical costs resulting from hospitalisation can be delayed or even prevented through early detection and appropriate management.
