Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

Measles virus causes rashes, cough, runny nose and fever. It can lead to complications like pneumonia, seizures, brain infections and ear infections.

Mumps virus mainly affects the salivary glands, but can also cause serious complications like deafness, brain infections and painful swelling of the testicles and ovaries.

Rubella virus (German Measles) causes rashes, arthritis, and fever. Rubella during pregnancy can lead to birth defects and even miscarriage.

Who should get the MMR Vaccine?

  • All adults who have not been vaccinated
  • All adults who lack evidence of immunity
  • All children are required to receive the MMR vaccine as part of the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS)

How is the vaccine given?

  • The MMR vaccination is an injection given into the arm
  • 2 doses are required 1 month apart

What are the common side effects of the vaccine?

  • Pain or swelling over the injection site
  • Fever
  • Severe allergic reactions: rashes, eye swelling, lip swelling or difficulty breathing
